Required Licensing for the treatment of Ticks and Fleas in new jersey

Previously, pesticide applications for the control of ticks and fleas were limited to Category 7A (General & Household Pest Control) and Category 8A (General Public Health Pest Control).

Due to the increasing impact of Lyme disease in New Jersey, treatment of high-grass and low-brush areas—where deer ticks are commonly found—has become necessary. In addition, fleas can be effectively managed in turf areas before becoming an indoor problem.

While Category 8A (General Public Health) remains the preferred license for controlling ticks and fleas both inside and outside structures, additional categories that correspond to the treatment site are now recognized.

The following are approved for tick treatment in New Jersey:

  • Category 3A (Ornamental) for tick control in low-brush areas
  • Category 3B (Turf) for tick control in turf areas
  • Category 3B (Turf) for flea control in turf areas

Applicators licensed in Category 7A or 8A may continue to treat turf and ornamental areas for ticks, and turf areas for fleas.

However, applicators licensed only in Category 3A or 3B are not permitted to perform treatments inside structures, including homes, offices, or schools.

Category 7A (General & Household Pest Control)
Permitted to treat inside structures (homes, offices, schools, etc.) for the control of ticks and fleas.
Also permitted to treat turf and ornamental areas for ticks, and turf areas for flea control.

Category 3A (Ornamental) & 3B (Turf)

  • Category 3A: Approved for tick control in low-brush areas
  • Category 3B: Approved for tick control in turf areas
  • Category 3B: Also approved for flea control in turf areas

Note: These categories do not permit treatment inside structures.

Category 8A (General Public Health Pest Control)
Preferred category for the control of ticks and fleas both inside and outside structures.
